Dear Parent/Guardian,
At Leigh Academy Hugh Christie we deliver our curriculum through a joint approach, delivering both PSHE (Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) through a one-hour a week lesson. I will be emailing you each Module to update you on the topics being covered for each Key Stage.
Please see the curriculum overview for Module 1 here
Through the teaching of PSHRE we will be covering a range of topics; it is an incredibly important subject that gives students the knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a fulfilling and active part in society. Elements of PSHRE were made a statutory requirement in September 2020, most notably elements of the Relationships and Sex curriculum. Key specifics of this can be found here.
We fully respect the backgrounds of all pupils and feel it is important to work collaboratively whilst ensuring that all pupils gain a factual understanding of content within the PSHRE curriculum. Our approach is informed by the national body- the PSHE Association and our own school’s context. We work in conjunction with our Safeguarding Team, to ensure that pupils feel safe in all lessons and that the content delivered is age appropriate and are delivered at timely moments within their lives.
Both relationships education and sex education is now compulsory for all secondary school pupils. Under certain parameters, parents/guardians have the right to withdraw their child up to and until three terms before the child turns 16. For more detailed information, please read about it here.
I hope that this communication supports your understanding of the PSHRE curriculum at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie, and we would welcome any feedback or questions that you may have by emailing info@hughchristie.latrust.org.uk.
Yours Sincerely,
Mrs K Harlin | Assistant Principal | Assistant Head of Angelou
