Dear Parents and Carers,
At Leigh Academy Hugh Christie, we are committed to the safety and well-being of every student. As part of our standard safety procedures—similar to our regular fire drills—we will be conducting a “Red Lockdown” practice on Wednesday afternoon, 18th March.
The purpose of this exercise is routine skill-building. We want to ensure that our procedures are “life skills” so that student reactions become automatic and calm in the event of any emergency.
To maintain a sense of realism while ensuring the community is prepared, please take note of the following:
- Timing: The drill will take place during a “time window” on Wednesday afternoon.
- School Access: During this practice window, the school will be “closed” to all visitors.
- Communication: School phone lines will not be answered while the drill is active.
- Student Instruction: Students will be briefed in advance through assemblies and advisory sessions. They are being taught that upon hearing the announcement “THIS IS A RED ALERT LOCKDOWN,” they must immediately enter the nearest classroom and remain silent.
We aim to empower our students with knowledge to reduce anxiety rather than cause alarm. Our Inclusion Team is currently working to identify and pre-brief students who may require 1-on-1 support or have specific Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs).
Immediately following the drill, teachers will spend time in class to check in on students and answer any questions they may have.
Following the exercise, we will send an email to inform you that the practice is complete. We appreciate your continued support in helping us maintain a proactive and prepared school environment.
Kind Regards,
Mrs K Harlin
