Dear Parents and Carers,

RE: Year 9 Science Fair / MYP Community Project.

I am writing to share exciting details regarding an important milestone in your child’s academic journey.

Students are just starting this significant project, which they will complete throughout modules 3 and 4. This year, the project has a specific Science focus. Their goal is to investigate a real-world problem affecting our community—whether it be our school, local environment, or families—and use scientific thinking, data, and innovation to design a solution or recommendation.

Throughout these modules, students will choose from three core investigation themes:

  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Biodiversity & Wildlife

To support their progress, students will have dedicated Science lessons to “ask the expert,” as well as weekly advisory sessions every Wednesday starting on January 14th.

As we are an IB world school, alongside developing their academic knowledge, students will also develop the values, skills, and attitudes needed to thrive in a global community. These projects help students develop key Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, such as teamwork, leadership, communication, and problem-solving, while encouraging them to reflect on their role in the wider world and make a positive difference in their community. Through these experiences, students build confidence, empathy, and resilience, whilst learning the value of service, responsibility, and collaboration, all of which are essential life skills and central to the IB ethos.

How you can support at home. We encourage you to discuss the project with your child by asking which community issue they feel passionate about. Your encouragement in helping them manage their independent research time and reflecting on the progress of their “Service as Action” will be invaluable to their success.

Save the Date: The Science Fair

The culmination of this hard work will be our Year 9 Science Fair. This is the final stage where students share their scientific research and the real-world impact of their actions.

  • Date: Tuesday, 31st March
  • Time: 2pm – 3pm
  • Location: The Main Hall

All parents and carers are warmly welcome to attend and see the amazing work their child has achieved. Staff and students will also be visiting to ask questions about the impact of each project. Exceptional work will be recognized with various awards, including engraved medals for winners and IB merit points for all completed projects.

I will write to you again nearer the time with further details. We look forward to celebrating the dedication and vision of our Year 9 students with you.

Yours faithfully

Michelle Draper
